LEOTEK Spearheads Ecological Lighting Initiative in Matsu Islands to Preserve Endemic Firefly Species

In a groundbreaking move towards biodiversity conservation and sustainable urban development, LEOTEK, North America’s leading provider of intelligent traffic and road lighting solutions, has launched a pioneering ecological lighting project in Taiwan’s Matsu Islands.

On March 6, LEOTEK orchestrated a landmark signing ceremony for the “Matsu Islands Female Firefly Ecological Lighting Demonstration Zone.” This collaborative effort brings together the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Lienchiang County Government, and Chinese Culture University under the banner of the “Light Taiwan: Friendly Light Environment Plan.”

The initiative aims to address the urgent need for conservation of the Matsu Islands’ endemic female firefly population, which has been declining due to light pollution from traditional LED streetlights. LEOTEK’s innovative ECOridge ecological lighting technology, developed through interdisciplinary research in optics and biology, offers a solution by reducing harmful blue light emissions to below 2% and minimizing light scatter.

Torrent Chin, President of LEOTEK, emphasized the importance of this project: “As lighting technology evolves, urban road lighting systems must balance ecological conservation with road safety. This initiative embodies our commitment to sustainability and biodiversity preservation.”

The project aligns with global environmental goals, including the UN’s 2050 net-zero emissions target and biodiversity conservation efforts. It also responds to the World Economic Forum’s identification of biodiversity loss as one of the most severe global risks in the coming decade.
