Founded in California’s Silicon Valley in 1992, LEOTEK has established itself as a leader in street, area, and signal lighting products in the USA and has expanded its influence globally. The company’s commitment to LED lighting technology has led to its selection for several world-class international projects, including a significant initiative in the Kingdom of Jordan.
Jordan’s Nationwide LED Street Light Conversion Project
In 2016, Jordan embarked on an ambitious project to replace hundreds of thousands of traditional streetlights with energy-efficient LED luminaires. This large-scale LED adoption was spearheaded by KBW Investments, with the aim of implementing this technology across the country and specifically in the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM). KBW Investments partnered with LEOTEK’s international team to bring efficient, transformative technological solutions to the region.
Collaboration and Challenges
HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal, founder and Chairman of KBW Investments, played a pivotal role in this initiative. The project involved navigating through PPP regulations and Jordanian investment laws to develop joint undertakings – a first for the country. The introduction of LED technology and the need to address varying road conditions with specific types of luminaires posed significant challenges.
Technical Expertise and Site Surveys
LEOTEK’s technical team, in collaboration with Jordanian officials, conducted extensive site surveys over more than 700 kilometers. These surveys were crucial in determining the best lighting solutions for the diverse topographical conditions of Jordan, ensuring high standards of road safety and meeting the government’s stringent requirements.
Historic Agreements and Smart City Solutions
KBW Investments signed two historic PPP and BOT agreements with Jordanian governmental entities to implement the LED project. These agreements were preceded by the construction of a new LED factory, reflecting a commitment to local employment and manufacturing. The agreements also included conceptual development for Amman’s smart city infrastructure solutions, further enhancing the city’s modernization.
Energy Savings and Environmental Impact
The LED installations in Jordan are expected to result in significant energy savings, averaging at 50 percent and reaching up to 70 percent in some areas. With the installation of 100,000 LED units, an estimated $US20 million is expected to be saved annually. These savings are a testament to the efficiency of LED technology in reducing energy consumption and costs.
LEOTEK’s Role in Jordan’s Sustainable Future
LEOTEK’s involvement in Jordan’s nationwide streetlight conversion project highlights the company’s global reach and its capability to provide efficient, sustainable lighting solutions. This project not only enhances the infrastructure of Jordan but also aligns with the country’s goals for energy security and environmental health, setting a precedent for future sustainable initiatives worldwide.
